BACKGROUND
The 2014 Paris Declaration on World AIDS Day acknowledged the disproportionate effect that HIV has on urban areas and the importance of municipal authorities in combating the virus. As a result, the 90-90-90 Target initiative was established, with the purpose of getting 90% of people living with HIV & TB being aware of their diagnosis, 90% of those being on Antiretroviral therapy/treatment, and 90% of those being virally suppressed/treated. For such ambitious targets to be reached, much of the work will have to take place in cities; where the program is also a platform for sound investments, social entrepreneurship and economic development in the most affected places.
With 22 Leading Municipalities in South Africa having signed up to the fast track UNAIDS 90-90-90 Target program to end HIV & AIDS by 2030, the greatest challenge has been identified as getting to the crucial first two 90's i.e: getting 90% of people living with HIV being tested and aware of their diagnosis, and getting 90% of those tested positive to get on to Antiretroviral treatment. Effective Strategies are in place but much more needs to be done with urgency, to drive the majority of populations at risk to test for HIV & those testing positive to get onto Antiretroviral treatment.
It is with this urgency of the 909090 Targets that we convene at the 2nd 90 Think Tank Forum on HIV to collaborate and uncover effective strategies and solutions that Decision Makers & Organizations can implement within their Cities & Municipalities to reach the crucial 2nd 90%.
